Tripura-Bangladesh Trade Boost: Rs 24.52 Cr sanction to link Gomati with Meghna

In a move to enhance trade between Tripura and Bangladesh, the Central government has initiated a project to connect the Gomati River in the state with the Meghna River in the neighboring country, allocating Rs 24.52 crore for the purpose. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury revealed that the project involves the dredging of the Gomati River from Sonamura in the Sepahijala District to Udaipur in the Gomati District of Tripura, covering a distance of approximately 40 km.

Additionally, the installation of 9 floating jetties and measures to prevent river bank erosion are planned. Chowdhury stated, “The Union Government’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has taken the initiative to link the Gomati River in the state with the Meghna River in Bangladesh. The central government has already sanctioned Rs 24.52 crore for the construction of internal waterways in the state.

In the said project, dredging of the Gomti River from Sonamura to Udaipur (40 km), installation of 9 floating jetties, and prevention of river bank erosion will be done.” He further mentioned that the Inland Waterways Authority of India had constructed a temporary floating jetty at Srimantapur in Sonamura under the Sepahijala district of Tripura, handed over to the Land Ports Authority of India on July 7, 2020.

INDIA bloc approves chairperson

INDIA bloc has approved Mallikarjun Kharge as the chairperson- son of opposition parties during a virtual meeting on Saturday.
However, INDIA bloc is yet to officially- announce Kharge’s name. Sources said that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was the contender for the post of convener of the INDIA bloc. However, during the meeting, he said that someone from Congress should assume the charge.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Rahul Gandhi, senior leader K.C. Venugopal; Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar along with Lalan Singh and Sanjay Jha; former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah; RJD President and Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar; Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal; Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin besides other leaders participated in the virtual meeting. “Appointing a chairper- son is just a first step only. There are many challenges ahead for the INDIA bloc. Even several parties of In- the dia bloc itself believe that one of the major challenges is the sheet sharing,” political experts said.

An IndiGo plane from India’s Mumbai to Guwahati had to make an emergency landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka early Saturday. The diverted plane landed in Dhaka at 4am after failing to land at the Guwahati airport owing to poor visibility. According to the airline, the passengers who are still onboard the plane have been served refreshments, and a replacement crew is being organized to transport them to Guwahati. IndiGo flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati was diverted to Dhaka, Bangladesh due to bad weather in Guwahati. Due to operational reasons, an alternate set of crew is being arranged to operate the flight from Dhaka to Guwahati.

The passengers were kept informed of updates and were served with refreshments on board. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused, an IndiGo statement said. Several passengers resorted to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the extended wait following the unexpected reroute.
